Top Ten Books of 2020!

Hello Bibliofriends!

Happy New Years Eve to you all! I don’t know about you but I am so pleased to be saying ‘good riddance’ to 2020 and HELLO 2021! Even without that teeny tiny global pandemic, this year has definitely been a toughie, particularly in the mental health and work department.

In spite of that, this is the first year since 2017 that I’ve actually managed to reach my Goodreads Reading Challenge Goal – hurray for the small wins!

This year I really managed to get my ass in gear on my blog and with Netgalley so some amazing books landed in my reading shaped lap. Surprisingly it wasn’t that difficult for me to sift through and pick out a top 7 books that I loved this year and then it was a little more difficult to try and fill out the remaining 3 spots to make it a top 10 – the pedantic-ness in my brain prevented me from quitting at the Top 7… I mean who ever heard of that? 😂

10. A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer

This was a surprisingly enjoyable read for me as I wasn’t expecting to warm to the new narrators after loving Rhen and Harper’s viewpoints so much. Needless to say, I now cannot wait for the final instalment of this series to come out next year especially after reading a sneak peek a short while ago! Read my review here!

9. Romanov by Nadine Brandes

What a magical retelling this was! The sentimentality and personalisation in Anastasia’s character really made me warm for her. The mystery of the Romanovs is one of my favourite historical conspiracies so I was overjoyed that I enjoyed this read so much. Read my review here!

8. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I totally binged this book in a day. After hearing so many brilliant things all over socials it was one of the first books I bought from an ‘in-real-life’ bookshop after lockdown. The intrigue had me turning page after page! Read my review here!

7. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

This book had been on my TBR for ages but the sheer size of it had always been putting me off. Thankfully lockdown gave me a little headspace in order to tackle the tricky narration of Cromwell. I loved the way Mantel characterised Cromwell; it was almost like seeing the historical period through his eyes rather than a 20th century historian’s. Fabulous! Read my review here!

6. My Fence is Electric: and Other Stories by Mark Newman

I was so thrilled to be approached by Odyssey Books to review this collection of short stories by the fabulous Mark Newman. His storytelling was the perfect antidote to the strange times that we were living through and really made me love this genre again. Slightly macabre with a hint of the weird and wonderful I highly recommend this collection! Read my review here!

5. Anna K by Jenny Lee

Crazy Rich Asians meets Sex and the City in this retelling of Anna Karenina. Although I’m not familiar with the tale of Anna Karenina it didn’t matter in the slightest as I was completely engrossed in the messy lives of these teenage New York rich kids! Read my review here!

4. The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott

This eco-fable had me really pondering the impact we humans have on the natural world. The magical elements of the legendary creatures woven into the story certainly appealed to my fantasy loving nature whilst at the same time delivering a powerful message to the reader. Read my review here!

3. Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez

It was really refreshing to read a fantasy story rooted in Bolivian folklore and culture. Ximena’s talent with woven animals is one of my favourite magical abilities. I can’t wait for the sequel to come out next year, it’s definitely one of my most anticipated releases for 2021.

2. The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

By golly did the opening of this book pitch me straight back in time to 1893 New Salem. I really love a distinctive narrative voice and this is definitely what Alix E. Harrow brought to this tale. The insertion of women’s suffrage and empowerment, a sapphic romance, witchcraft-a-plenty, and the bond between three sisters made this a total 5-star read for me – it blew my mind!   1. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

If you’ve read any of my posts, lists or tags since October then this should be no surprise that Addie LaRue is my all-time favourite book of 2020. It was the book I didn’t realise I needed in my life. Addie’s story was told so poetically and beautifully and I loved the way Schwab tackled the theme of identity and what happens when you’re not really sure who you are anymore. This book has definitely made its way into my God-Tier of favourite books EVER! I loved it! Read my review here!

A new species of animal has been discovered, what does it look like and what is it called?

It lives in the darkest depths of the rainforests so nobody has ever seen it’s real form. Some people think it is made of shadow although lucky eyewitnesses think it may look a little like a Niffler…
It eats lies, justice and inequality (and other general worldwide bullshit really) therefore it has been named Inprobumbra Comedenti

Middle Earth – ASAP please!!! I’d love to tour The Shire, see the elves in Rivendell wander the glistening streets of Gondor.

Space Travel is now available to everyone & the first Space Rollercoaster has been invented. Would you ride it?  

Hell yes! I am such a rollercoaster-junkie! Space Mountain is one of my favourite rides at Disney World so if it’s anything like that then count me in!

Ahaana’s Questions:

When did you start blogging?
I think I technically started blogging in 2017 when I was using a different blog title and identity called Cotswold Bookaholic. Blogging wasn’t something that really stuck back then and I couldn’t really find my blogging voice or purpose so eventually it fizzled until around 2019 when I relaunched as The Biblioshelf. 

Why did you start blogging? What made you?
I think I started blogging just to become part of a community and get involved. None of my family or friends enjoyed the types of books or even enjoyed reading as much as I did so I had to find other people to share that with! The blogging community has been so wonderful to me and I love that it is such an inclusive place to be a part of and share our love for all things bookish!

What’s your favourite part of being in the blogosphere?
Without a doubt, the amazing community and books, books, books! There are so many wonderful books and authors I’ve been introduced to because of the blogging community and for me that’s really the heart of why we’re all here in the great blogosphere!

What genres of music do you listen to? Any favourite artists/songs?
My iPod is so varied that a random shuffle can bring out Bob Marley followed by Dolly Parton, Eminem and Pavarotti. I don’t have one specific genre that I like listening to Florence + the Machine would definitely be my desert island discs or the discography that I’d be saving from a burning building. I’ve been on every tour and have every single album and remix going!

What’s your favourite book genre?
I think it has to be fantasy. It’s the one I gravitate to the most. There’s just something extraordinary about the magic, elves, witches, dragons and mythological creatures that make me wish I really did have a fictional worlds passport to escape reality on Earth sometimes.

Where’s your favourite place to read?
In bed or in the quiet, cosy spaces. I love the ideal of being able to read in coffee shops and things but I always get distracted by people watching so I need somewhere to read with minimal distractions as possible!

What do you dislike about blogging in general?
I sometimes wish I had the creativity to come up with lots of different posts and content rather than just keep posting tags, memes and reviews – that’s more of a personal goal rather than something I necessarily dislike. I wish I had more time to dedicate to it to.

Do you prefer dogs or cats?
I am definitely a dog person! I can’t remember a time when we didn’t have a dog in our house. They’re like family and I’d hate to be without them!

Which book is closest to your heart? Why?
This one is so tough. I have a few books that make my ‘God-Tier’ and they include: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, The Throne of Glass Series and Ready Player One.
The most recent addition to this tier was The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwa because it absolutely stole my heart. I think it’s the way that Addie and Henry’s personalities, attributes and deepest desires reflected my own. They really resonated with me in a way that not many characters have ever done – so that book would have to be my pick! I love it so, so much!

What other hobbies/talents do you have besides blogging?
I have a large amount of useless knowledge and absolutely love pub-quizzes and gameshows. Before becoming a teacher, one of my hobbies was line-dancing (it’s where the country music influence comes in!) and I did choreograph some of my own dances which were published online.
Hobby-wise nowadays two sports I love watching and am involved in are Rugby Union and Horse Racing. I’m a member of both my local sports venues for those and am also an owner in several horse racing syndicates.

Do you have a pet? Or do you want one? Which one?
I’ve had so many pets over my childhood (chickens, ducks, geese, a rabbit, fish, greyhounds) but my all-time favourites are our dogs! We’ve had Cavalier King Charles Spaniels ever since I can remember – they’re more like family than pets!

I tried, I really did, but it was too late.

Today is the final part of ‘If Lord of the Rings Characters Had Modern Day Occupations’! Galadriel: Fashion Queen

Initially starting small, Galadriel developed her own jewellery line of delicate rings and necklaces featuring some of the rarest and precious gemstones and metals from around the globe. Her brand sky-rocketed when a middle-eastern princess commissioned Galadriel to design her wedding tiara when she married one of the world’s most eligible billionaires. A rapid shoot-to-fame and being so in-demand nearly collapsed her entire company however, after taking some time out at Elrond’s exclusive Dellriven retreat, Galadriel returned to the fashion world completely overhauling her brand’s identity and ethos. With their new signature ‘Mallorn tree’ logo, Galadriel’s company Nenya, set upon their mission to be the first and only sustainable, ethical haute couture fashion house around the globe. The company has outfitted many stars for high-profile events including the Met Gala and Oscars, as well as appearing on some of the world’s most renowned fashion runways and the pages of the glossiest magazines. Galadriel’s creative flair and waspish prowess has enabled her to rise to the very top of the world’s fashion royalty and now Nenya is one of the only brands today’s A-Listers want to be seen in.

Eomer: Bloodstock Agent – Godolphin

Having access to some of the most affluent connections in the horse-racing industry through sister Eowyn, Eomer also found himself with a role working for one of the largest owners in the business. With an analytical mind and a great deal of integrity, Eomer was soon snapped up by Godolphin to head their team of bloodstock agents. With a keen-eye for evaluating horses and an almost photographic memory of equine bloodlines, Eomer carved out a shrewd reputation for himself in the industry catapulting the Godolphin team to huge successes with horses such as: Barney Roy, Dubawi, Dawn Approach and Kayf Tara.

Saruman: Arboretum Janitor

After a seemingly endless stint in Sabaneta Prison, Venezuela – Saruman resolved to put all matters and mis-deeds of his former life as “Sauron’s bitch” behind him. Having had extensive therapy for his onset dendrophobia (fear of trees), Saruman was forced to live out the rest of his sentence doing community service work at Westonbirt Arboretum in the leafy Cotswolds of England. His previous convictions, criminal record and lack of skills meant that he could only be employed to work as a janitor with responsibilities such as collecting rubbish and refuse from around the forest. Sometimes, when he is alone wandering through the trees, he swears he can hear them whispering…

That’s a wrap!!! I’ve had so much fun writing these posts and researching all of the little details to finish them off! I think Eowyn, Galadriel and Gandalf were some of my favourite ones to write. Legolas: Fashion Model / Actor / Boat Designer

In his early career, Legolas spent some time as a fashion model and B-Movie actor being picked out for his lustrous long locks and willow-like figure. Touted as a gay icon, his life was plagued by paparazzi who constantly hounded him about his love-life until he was forced to come out of the closet and admit his sexuality. Tired of the exhaustive, partying lifestyle of LA, Legolas packed up and went backpacking with his close friend Gimli in the forests of Scandinavia. It was there where he met his current life-partner Kristoffsven and the pair now live in a humble treehouse where they make wooden sailboats which they ship all across Europe and naturally, to the Grey Havens.

Gimli: Retired

Coming into a massive inheritance from a distant-cousin-thrice-removed, Gimli retired early and now lives a relatively easy life. He spends a majority of the year travelling around the earth to spend time with his friends. He recently purchased a treehouse right next door to Legolas and Kristoffven and spends a lot of time at his Scandinavian retreat; however, he avoids the months when illegal dwarf-tossing competitions take place… just in case! As a part-time hobby, Gimli enjoys participating in medieval re-enactments and often loans his extensive private collections of historic weaponry and armoury to various museums and exhibitions.

Aragorn and Arwen: Philanthropists / ‘Royal Celebrities’

Having reclaimed the throne of Gondor and successfully restoring the bloodline of Kings, Aragorn and Arwen found themselves a little stifled by a life of royal oppression. Tired of living in the goldfish bowl at court, not being able to speak their own minds about political matters or causes of global injustice, Aragorn and Arwen deserted their realm in a quest for a more financially independent, private family life. The couple needed an escape pronto and were relieved when their long-time confidante Gandalf offered them the use of his private jet and an unlimited free lease on his stunning waterfront mansion in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Massive fences were erected around the property to try and prevent paparazzi drones from flying in. Having seemingly dropped off the radar, the only people with any current access to the couple are two freelance journalists believed to be writing a biography of the former royals – even though a spokesperson for the couple stated that Aragorn and Arwen would not actually be contributing to the book themselves. An early tabloid-leak (thought to be from a hacked mobile phone), revealed details of an interview with James Corden which seems to support the rumours that Arwen has set her sights on becoming the future Secretary-General of the United Nations whilst Aragorn will be creating his own global TV production company. So much for the quiet life! 😉

How has your week been? We are creeping ever closer to half term and I cannot wait to have a chance to switch off and recharge my batteries – this term has been something else! But enough of all that… let’s focus on the fairies in this week’s Fae Friday! 😍

October 16th prompt:

This week was created by the brilliant Nery from postcardsfromlalaland.com! Faeries are known for their love of food, so we’re wondering:

What books have such fantastic food descriptions that you’re hungry after reading them?

Not gonna lie – Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye popped straight into my mind as soon as I read this week’s prompt. The food descriptions in that book made me dedicate an entire paragraph to it in my review (which you can read here, just to check out how much I love the food in this book! 😂) – don’t blame me if you come away from it craving Asian food!

Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal is another book which, although it doesn’t necessarily make me crave the hot chilli goodness inside its pages, has to be a notable mention here for the brilliant incorporation of food into fiction. It’s quite a unique read which has stuck in my memory for a long period of time.

And finally, I could not talk about food in books without an honorary mention to Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin.
Those.
Cinnamon.
Buns.
I would not be embellishing the truth when I say that I drove all the way to the supermarket just to buy a box of cinnamon buns. The only ones that have come even close to what I imagine they really taste like in the book is Morrisons. I rarely ever shop there and even then I only got to try them once as they always seem to be unavailable every time I get to the store!

This week’s Friday 56 comes from The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow. I loved the atmosphere and storytelling which catapulted me straight back into 1890s New Salem and introduced me to some fierce, sassy new witches. Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit / Little, Brown Book Group for providing me with a complimentary e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

From the first few pages of this book, I had those 5-star read vibes and let me tell you, Alix E Harrow did not let me down! Those characters, that storyline, that slow-burn sapphic romance! I was crying my eyes out by the end as the ending certainly kept me on my toes! You really should read it! You can check out my full, spoiler-free review here.
